It Can't Happen Here.

Woah! That's crazy dude. This isn't a Poem. Its almost like *Cough* I haven't finished setting up my other site POLITICAL.POSTACH.IO *Cough* or something. Anywho.
"It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis is a prophetic novel from 1935. it is prophetic in the sense that Sinclair Lewis seemed to have a deep understanding of people and their political machinations. Here I have, as briefly as I could, gathered what I saw as the really important bits. Obviously it's lacking some context, but I don't think that fact will take away from the core of it.
Obviously this will cover some content some will find disquieting or triggering
"Historical" Racism, Homophobia, Antisemitism, and just general disregard for basic human decency ahead. (luckily not by me),
The 15 points summarized
Buzz Windrip's 15 points use contradictory points in an attempt to appeal to the largest political base possible. These points use false hope and American chauvinism to enable disagreeing groups to accept them and their outright betrayal of American principles of liberty, the separation of church and state, and the complete and total destruction of our fragile checks and balances. A dictatorship is systematically created by giving the president and those he appoints absolute power.
The first point completely neuters Congress by giving the president absolute control over the economy. This is done by creating a board "empowered to make all regulations governing finance". This is further reinforced by giving this board absolute authority to nationalize "mines, oilfields, water power, public utilities, transportation, and communication", meaning every valuable resource or piece of infrastructure. This guarantees the owners of these resources will work with the Windrip Administration because the alternative is having your business and property taken.
The second point gives the President absolute control over all labor organizations by elevating favorable unions to government offices and banning dissident organizations. Later the same process will be done on America's farm organizations. This in effect completely silences workers by taking away their ability to organize and removing their already limited rights to good working conditions; and gives the President indirect control over food production and prices.
The third point directly contradicts the first two points and the fifth by guaranteeing private property and private initiatives. This is an outright lie as above it is stated the government maintains the right to nationalize everything in America of value including money, and any publicly owned but privately run business will lose all control if they don't play ball with the Windrip Administration. It also seems to try to draw the elderly vote by implying some form of social security.
The fourth point makes America for Christians alone, as any non-Christian is barred from holding "any public office or to practice as a teacher, professor, lawyer, judge, or as a physician, except in the category of Obstetrics." Preventing them from having any cultural impact or making any serious money. This combined with point 9, which classifying Jews as non-Americans. Point 10 which makes anyone of 1/16th African-American blood a slave. As well as point 12, which in effect removes all women's rights and relocates them once again to the job of breeding sow. These in combination amass to the goal of an "Ideal American Ethnostate" for white Christian patriots.
Point five at first glance abolishes the needlessly rich, but in reality simply pressures the rich to cooperate with the Windrip. If the rich don't they get their assets and inheritances siezed, but if they do they get the extra privileges of being a government official.
Point six guarantees under its broad definition all manufacture or production during wartime, which they can arbitrarily declare, can in effect have all profits taxed. This enables them to remove their opponents and incentivizing Business owners to turn on their peers to get better government positions or favors.
Point seven states the scaling up of America's military might will be the primary goal of the Windrip Administration. It is almost explicitly stated the goal is to have all branches of our military to rival the largest power groups in the world with the goal of world conquest.
Point Eight bribes congress with the power to print money to line their pockets and requires them to all but crash the global economy. Locally this would barely effect the richest of Americans, but would cripple the middle class and poor Americans. Internationally, this would hurt all countries that use US Dollars. It would radically drop prices of imported goods temporarily and would enable governments and companies in the know to consolidate and clear foreign debts before the fall.
Point eleven states that should economic prosperity not magically appear it is not the President's fault. The blame can simply be passed to this subordinate committee or to any of the consultants listed.
Point thirteen allows the Windrip Administration to execute or imprison anyone they see fit by arbitrarily declaring them communists. It sews dissent and suspicion between Americans. Americans all of the sudden can improve their quality of life by ratting on their neighbors.
Point fourteen guarantees veteran and military support. The group most likely to cause significant problems in a governmental takeover becomes one of their best assets.
Point fifteenth is the most important point as it truly secures the Windrip Administration's iron grip on America. Congress is made purely an advisor and the Supreme Court has no ability to veto the president. Like a keystone in an arch, this point guarantees the Administration the ability to enforce the other 14 points.
Doremus Jessup's beliefs throughout the novel did not waiver from his strong beliefs in freedom, liberty, and what he views as American values, however how what he sees as his part to play in maintaining those values radically shifts throughout the book. In the first eight chapters of the book Doremus recognizes the risk of Fascism in America and even warns his close friends to some success such as agreement from Father Perefixe, but Doremus himself still doubts Fascism can really rise in America. Even after he is directly threatened he does nothing to act in a mix of complacency, disbelief, and fear of consequences leads him to largely do nothing to hamper Buzz's rise to power.
This at first gradually, then radically changed over the course of the novel. Chafing at the notion of American values like free speech and liberty are being eroded all too late becomes a desire to speak out about the injustice of the Windrip presidency after professors start getting arrested for their ideas. This is the final nail in him having any say in his paper the Daily Informer. With no hope of leaving the country, he takes more radical action forming a New Underground cell leading to his arrest. In being savagely tortured, watching the people he is trapped with degrade, and being isolated and ignorant to what was happening to the people he loved Doremus's resolve to overthrow the fascist dictatorship is strengthened. After escaping to Canada his desire to make a meaningful impact is so great he returns to America in the hopes of saving his country in spite of the risks.
Doremus transitions from a self proclaimed burgouis intellectual to a radical and effective organizer and activitist. He realizes the damage his, and his fellow Americans, complacency caused and acts not to atone but on his principles. Even at his lowest point Doremus is able to see the futility and harm of actions like the murder of Shad in the Concentration Camp. Doremus' becomes someone who pays attention to the world and the people in it without losing any reverence to the ideas he values. He became the kind of person who sticks his neck out for what be believes in and the people those beliefs protect.
It Can't Happen Here is an excellent showcase of the weakness of democracy. Buzz Windrip, Lee Saranson, Bishop Prang and their party use average Americans hopes and fears and weapons against them. Their focus is not to engage with the world as it is, they sell an ideal version of the world. A version of the world that isn't help up by logistics or reason, but instead is Utopia at no cost.
Very similarly to several President's, most recently Trump, cults of personality combine over common values in order to amass power. Much like Trump Buzz Windrip, with the aid of skilled advisors, carefully naritivized his own history and being making the public see him as not the conman who in the past sold snake oil as medicine, but instead as a pioneer of the Common man. Instead of being done with stories online, through social media, and networking television as it would be done today in It Can't Happen Here this is done through a book ghost wrote by Lee Saranson, the calls to action by preacher Bishop Prang, and paid off or later intimidated journalists. A core group is established, in this case American patriots, and an out group is established to be hated: in this case the jews, blacks, or communists. Later after the "Corpos" achieved near total control, details are conveniently charged or sensationalized to maximize its effective on the public. Sometimes the same bit of good news is rereported as new, or news is even created such as the instances of "false flags" in the book such as the framing of Mexico for a fake attack on America.
The techniques used by media today are no different than the techniques used in the past, but the technology enabled us to do it more effectively. Instead of having to pay for radio waves Bishop Prang could have had a livestream to spread his hate for free. Buzz could l Instead of having to galivant about the country and relying on word of mouth he could have had constant access to every American with an internet connection to spread his sugary and contradictory ideas. There will always be people selling salvation for 50 cents, and seeing it in the past without the complexities of the modern world make it all the more obvious.
"It Cant Happen Here" has a narrative arc that most resembles the story of Oedipus, fall then rise then fall, type, however the story ends on a neutral note as opposed to a true fall. In the beginning Doremus begins to stand up for his beliefs in American values in opposition to the rise of Fascism. After this high point Doremus is captured and taken to a concentration camp bringing him to the lowest point in his life losing all he cares about. He begins to rise again in prison up to the point he is finally freed and can escape to Canada. He rises still in his work in Canada with the New Underground and his return to the United States. However, in the couple pages of the book it reached a point where the Corpos find him and intend to catch him. This forces him to be hidden away by the New Underground in a safe house ending the book in a neutral point. Fascism could reassert itself in force or it could fall and America could become free once more. The ends ambiguity is a subtle but important change from the standard fall rise fall arc that leaves a far greater burden on the reader.
"It Can't Happen Here" was a radical piece of literature that pushed social and cultural boundaries, as I see it; it isn't really a piece of Modernist literature. It is heavily grounded in the realm of what is possible. It plays with absurdity, but nothing unrealistic. Further, instead of being highly individualistic it uses the individual to examine the fragility of society from a single detached narrators perspective. These characteristics are antithetical to what most would consider Modernist writing.

Chapter 1-8
This first part of the book introduces the setting and the characters while showcasing the rise of Buzz's party. Showcasing failings in the structure of democracy; a populist movement votes supported by a worshipped radio preacher and a political party called "The League of Forgotten Men". Chapter eight introduces "the 15 points" of his campaign and turns the Minute Men into an actual military force.

Key Plot Summaries
  1. Setting and Premise: Set in 1930s America at the height of Fascism in Europe. About the rise of fascism in America through a cult of personality around a Senator. The Senator runs on a contradictory platform appeasing all possible groups to gain power through the ballot, strengthen it with special interest, and guarantee it with force.
  2. The basis of the platform Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip is pious nationalism. He says he is a champion of the forgotten man. He is very charismatic and sincerely establishes himself as different. Buzz is able to convince opposing groups he is on both of their sides garnering him unprecedented support. This and Buzz's willful ignorance enables others like Lee Serison to run pull his strings like a puppet. Their campaign based on 15 points broadly being promises a revitalization of American culture through strong tribalism, defense through strength, and broad economic reforms to benefit the people such as a payment of some thousand dollars (for reference $5000 dollars in 1930s money would be worth roughly $80000 today).
  3. The Minute Men are the man way force is applied In America. At first its ranks are purposeless young people, religious followers of Buzz, and Bigots, but as Buzz's platform grows common Americans are "incentivized" to join or face consequences.
  4. Doremus Jessup is a main protagonist who opposes the two relevant factions of Fascism in Buzz's party and the various flavors of communists in strict defense of his America values of freedom and alike. He sees the signs of Fascism in Buzz's platform and tries to warn his friends, his family, and the public, but the near universal response is "it can't happen here" preluded and/or followed by a diatribe about how American is the land of freedom and liberty so it is immune.

The 15 points.
  1. (1) All finance in the country, including banking, insurance, stocks and bonds and mortgages, shall be under the absolute control of a Federal Central Bank, owned by the government and conducted by a Board appointed by the President, which Board shall, without need of recourse to Congress for legislative authorization, be empowered to make all regulations governing finance. Thereafter, as soon as may be practicable, this said Board shall consider the nationalization and government-ownership, for the Profit of the Whole People, of all mines, oilfields, water power, public utilities, transportation, and communication. The now President as a dictator had made a board he has direct control over that can effectively control of the entire economy and has stated they are siezing all natural resources and infrastructure.
  2. (2) The President shall appoint a commission, equally divided between manual workers, employers, and representatives of the Public, to determine which Labor Unions are qualified to represent the Workers; and report to the Executive, for legal action, all pretended labor organizations, whether "Company Unions," or "Red Unions," controlled by Communists and the so-called "Third International." The duly recognized Unions shall be constituted Bureaus of the Government, with power of decision in all labor disputes. Later, the same investigation and official recognition shall be extended to farm organizations. In this elevation of the position of the Worker, it shall be emphasized that the League of Forgotten Men is the chief bulwark against the menace of destructive and un-American Radicalism. The now President turned the unions into government offices he has completed control over, dispelled all rival organizations, and siezed control over America's food production.
  3. (3) In contradistinction to the doctrines of Red Radicals, with their felonious expropriation of the arduously acquired possessions which insure to aged persons their security, this League and Party will guarantee Private Initiative and the Right to Private Property for all time. Pro-American chauvinism that directly contradicts points 1 just to assuage peoples concerns at America becoming "Red".
  4. (4) Believing that only under God Almighty, to Whom we render all homage, do we Americans hold our vast Power, we shall guarantee to all persons absolute freedom of religious worship, provided, however, that no atheist, agnostic, believer in Black Magic, nor any Jew who shall refuse to swear allegiance to the New Testament, nor any person of any faith who refuses to take the Pledge to the Flag, shall be permitted to hold any public office or to practice as a teacher, professor, lawyer, judge, or as a physician, except in the category of Obstetrics. America is now only for Christian patriots.
  5. (5) Annual net income per person shall be limited to $500,000. No accumulated fortune may at any one time exceed $3,000,000 per person. No one person shall, during his entire lifetime, be permitted to retain an inheritance or various inheritances in total exceeding $2,000,000. All incomes or estates in excess of the sums named shall be seized by the Federal Government for use in Relief and in Administrative expenses. Tax the rich so they come to make deals with you on a case by case basis; ensuring you as dictator get the best deal.
  6. (6) Profit shall be taken out of War by seizing all dividends over and above 6 percent that shall be received from the manufacture, distribution, or sale, during Wartime, of all arms, munitions, aircraft, ships, tanks, and all other things directly applicable to warfare, as well as from food, textiles, and all other supplies furnished to the American or to any allied army. Profit is no longer allowed in the American economy. Aid is basically banned.
  7. (7) Our armaments and the size of our military and naval establishments shall be consistently enlarged until they shall equal, but since this country has no desire for foreign conquest of any kind-not surpass, in every branch of the forces of defense, the martial strength of any other single country or empire in the world. Upon inauguration, this League and Party shall make this its first obligation, together with the issuance of a firm proclamation to all nations of the world that our armed forces are to be maintained solely for the purpose of insuring world peace and amity. America shall have a large enough military in all forms to conquer any nation on earth.
  8. (8) Congress shall have the sole right to issue money and immediately upon our inauguration it shall at least double the present supply of money, in order to facilitate the fluidity of credit. Congress now is to print money indefinitely to devalue the dollar to make people's savings and foreign debt worthless, reduce effective pay, and enable the government to spend money it doesn't have.
  9. (9) We cannot too strongly condemn the un-Christian attitude of certain otherwise progressive nations in their discriminations against the Jews, who have been among the strongest supporters of the League, and who will continue to prosper and to be recognized as fully Americanized, though only so long as they continue to support our ideals. Basically "Kill and enslave the kikes" providing the new American public a convenient enemy.
  10. (10) All Negroes shall be prohibited from voting, holding public office, practicing law, medicine, or teaching in any class above the grade of grammar school, and they shall be taxed 100 per cent of all sums in excess of $10,000 per family per year which they may earn or in any other manner receive. In order, however, to give the most sympathetic aid possible to all Negroes who comprehend their proper and valuable place in society, all such colored persons, male or female, as can prove that they have devoted not less than forty-five years to such suitable tasks as domestic service, agricultural labor, and common labor in industries, shall at the age of sixty-five be permitted to appear before a special Board, composed entirely of white persons, and upon proof that while employed they have never been idle except through sickness, they shall be recommended for pensions not to exceed the sum of $500.00 per person per year, nor to exceed $700.00 per family. Negroes shall, by definition, be persons with at least one sixteenth colored blood. Blacks are now slaves again.
  11. (11) Far from opposing such high-minded and economically sound methods of the relief of poverty, unemployment, and old age as the EPIC plan of the Hon. Upton Sinclair, the "Share the Wealth" and "Every Man a King" proposals of the late Hon. Huey Long to assure every family $5000 a year, the Townsend plan, the Utopian plan. Technocracy, and all competent schemes of unemployment insurance, a Commission shall immediately be appointed by the New Administration to study, reconcile, and recommend for immediate adoption the best features in these several plans for Social Security, and the Hon. Messrs. Sinclair, Townsend, Eugene Reed, and Howard Scott are herewith invited to in every way advise and collaborate with that Commission. Meaningless promise to manipulate the new American public into supporting the new regime.
  12. (12) All women now employed shall, as rapidly as possible, except in such peculiarly feminine spheres of activity as nursing and beauty parlors, be assisted to return to their incomparably sacred duties as home-makers and as mothers of strong, honorable future Citizens of the Commonwealth. No more women's rights. Breeding sow's managing the house and the money.
  13. (13) Any person advocating Communism, Socialism, or Anarchism, advocating refusal to enlist in of war, advocating alliance with Russia any war whatsoever, shall be subject to trial for high treason, with a minimum penalty of twenty years at hard labor in prison, and a maximum of death on the gallows, or other form of execution which the judges may find convenient. If you are "Red" you are dead, and they get to decide if you are Red or not. Regardless of what you say or of any evidence.
  14. (14) All bonuses promised to former soldiers of any war in which America has ever engaged shall be immediately paid in full, in cash, and in all cases of veterans with incomes of less than $5,000.00 a year, the formerly promised sums shall be doubled. The military will be rewarded for falling in line. Any who don't will be removed under point 13.
  15. (15) Congress shall, immediately upon our inauguration, initiate amendments to the Constitution providing (a), that the President shall have the authority to institute and execute all necessary measures for the conduct of the government during this critical epoch; (b), that Congress shall serve only in an advisory capacity, calling to the attention of the President and his aides and Cabinet any needed legislation, but not acting upon same until authorized by the President so to act; and (c), that the Supreme Court shall immediately have removed from its jurisdiction the power to negate, by ruling them to be unconstitutional or by any other judicial action, any or all acts of the President, his duly appointed aides, or Congress. The president has no check on his power. His powers will be all encompassing and absolute.
  16. Note: At this time broadly speaking the parties of Democrats were the Christian conservatives who were pro-slavery and the Republicans were the liberal pro-human freedoms party had just recently swapped. Addendum: It shall be strictly understood that, as the League of Forgotten Men and the Democratic Party, as now constituted, have no purpose nor desire to carry out any measure that shall not unqualifiedly meet with the desire of the majority of voters in these United States, the League and Party regard none of the above fifteen points as obligatory and unmodifiable except No. 15, and upon the others they will act or refrain from acting in accordance with the general desire of the Public, who shall under the new régime be again granted an individual freedom of which they have been deprived by the harsh and restrictive economic measures of former administrations, both Republican and Democratic. As point 15 is non negotiable in reality none of the points are negotiable.

Doremus Jessup - A well educated liberal Newspaper editor and proprietor of the Daily Informer. "A small town bourgeois intellectual" who actively uses his platform to speak what he sees as true.
Karl Pascal - ideological communist
"Shad" Ledue - This character is an archetype of a failing of democracy. Purely acting on self interest and ignorance. Having no real interest in learning about that which would inoculate him against the hollow promises of fascism he is an active member in his area promoting fascism. Is down horrendous for Sissy
"Sissy" - free spirited feminist being oppressed by the inconsistency of the state. Jessup's daughter
